Catholic Charities is working closely with the Franklin McKinley School District in San Jose to deliver Prevention & Early Intervention (PEI) Services in partnership with the Mental Health Department. Employing evidence-based practices, PEI services are targeting high-risk youth and their families with the goal of preventing, reducing, and eliminating mental health issues that may be inhibiting academic success and family wellness. The Behavior Specialist supports PEI by engaging families in services aimed at addressing behavioral issues through educational workshops and sessions, and behavior support planning service in the home and in the community, connecting students and families to resources that will reduce/eliminate nonproductive and violent behaviors. Extensive training will be provided.

1. Provide outreach and recruitment strategies to engage families in PEI programming:
o Facilitate presentations to teachers and school staff
o Host information tables in community events
o Engage families during school events

2. Provide Case Management Services (meets with families in the community and/or in the home)
o Work with families to identify nonproductive behavior in their student
o Engage in classroom observations to identify behavioral/nonproductive trends and symptoms exhibited by student
o Assist/educate family on skills and techniques in addressing behavioral problems
o Formulates, implements and monitors individual student/family service plans;
o Conducts follow-ups and monitors service delivery and client progress;
o Assist families with service provider process navigation to ensure service obtainment
o Ensure that all required forms, consents, family plans, legal documentation, etc. are properly completed and kept up to date
o Transfer family and service documentation to electronic data systems as necessary
o Maintains a caseload of 10-15 families

3. Lead student and family workshops and sessions
o Facilitate family education workshops following identified curriculum (Strengthening Families)
o Facilitate enhanced behavior support sessions in individual and group settings (Triple P Level 4)
o Ensures all workshop preparation activities have been executed

4. Provide outreach, engagement and education activities on weekdays, evenings and weekends as needed.

5. Participate in required trainings and attend monthly PEI team meetings and quarterly trainings, as appropriate.
6. Attend Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County trainings, meetings, and events as required.

7. Complete all other duties as assigned.

• BA in counseling, psychology, child development or related field (Preferred);
• Six years’ experience in lieu of education required in mental health field

• Bilingual Spanish or Vietnamese/English;
• Case Management/Counseling experience in a community based setting;
• Effective verbal and written communication skills;
• Strong public speaking ability;
• Understanding and sensitivity of economic, cultural issues in diverse communities;
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision;
• Ability to meet deadlines;
• Demonstrated computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, and Internet usage);
• Team oriented with strong interpersonal and organizational skills;
• Fingerprinting and background check as required by the DOJ and DMV clearance;
• TB test required

• The service is sometimes physical, requiring setting up for events which may require transporting or lifting cumbersome materials, e.g., easels, flip charts, refreshments, brochures, chairs, tables, etc.
• Must be able to report to service site on a regular and reliable basis
• Able to deal with stressful situations
• Must be able to work a flexible schedule, which includes day, evening, weekend, and holiday hours, as appropriate, to coordinate and provide services and activities for families during non-traditional hours
• Able to travel between sites and to attend offsite events throughout the county, as appropriate

• Must possess a valid California Driver’s license, reliable transportation and current auto insurance


• Must be at least 18 years of age
• Must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident
